A BUMPER crowd has turned out for the official start of the Western Rugby League season, highlighted by Thargomindah’s return to the playing field after a 24-year hiatus.
Almost 12 months after the tiny community was devastated by floods, the Thargo Bulls took to the Charleville Showgrounds on Saturday night but sadly, there would be no fairytale comeback.
In their first game, Thargo copped a 26-0 pasting at the hands of Buddy Peacock’s Charleville Comets No.2 team before losing 30-0 to the Comets’ No.1 side, also under the coaching of Peacock.
In the season opener, Cunnamulla Rams had to dig deep before overcoming the Comets’ No.1 team 22-16 and the four-game program wrapped up with Comets No.2 beating the Rams 12-8 under lights.
Round 2 will be played this Saturday (March 21) at Cunnamulla.
