MP FIRES UP WITH GUN LAWS BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT

MARANOA MP David Littleproud has taken to national TV to spell out his concerns with Labor’s response to last year’s Bondi Beach massacre.

Speaking on Nine’s Today show yesterday, as seen locally on Imparja, the former Nationals Leader has taken a swipe at NSW Premier Chris Minns, who after overhauling gun laws south of the border, has now confirmed a buyback scheme in his State, in partnership with the Federal Government.

“Let’s understand it was a tragedy but what Chris Minns changed in those gun laws was that only people in New South Wales could own four guns? There were four guns used in that tragedy. So what he changed would not have changed the outcome of Bondi,” Mr Littleproud said.

“What he did with the Prime Minister was look for a political out rather than actually use common sense. We don’t have a gun problem in this country. We have an extreme Islamic problem in this country, and that’s what we need to face up to.

“You just can’t walk in and get a gun because you want one in this country. You have to go through a fit and proper person test. You actually have to go through. But we had terrorists who didn’t get access.”

Mr Littleproud, who recently tripped around his vast electorate before returning to Parliament, claimed guns were not an issue in Australia.

“If you have that much hate in your heart, whether it’s a gun, whether it’s a car, whether it’s a bomb, you’re going to be out. You’re going to do that,” he said.

“The reality is, we do not have a gun problem, and what he changed those laws too would not have changed the outcome. He (Premier Minns) changed in NSW. You could only own four guns and if you look at the police report, there were four guns used. In fact, there were three; one was left in the car, so it wouldn’t have changed the outcome. So, why change the laws? It was all about a political fix.

“We have the stringest, most stringent gun laws in the world. You just can’t get one because you want one. You have to go through a lot of a lot of tests. You also can’t get a high calibre gun because you want one. You actually have to prove the necessity for it.”

Mr Littleproud also shone a light on those people charged with the responsibility of protecting Australians.

“What failed was our intelligence agencies who had this person on a register in understanding they posed a risk,” he said.

“I would have thought common sense that if an intelligence agency or a police force saw that they were a risk to society, the first thing you would do is take their guns off them. We had this person in the system but the system wasn’t smart enough to walk around and say, “Mate, we’re worried about you actually using this on somebody. We’re going to take your gun license and we’re going to take your guns away from you.”

“It showed that the system did work and that is the sad thing that you were going to impinge on the rights of so many Australians who do the right thing because of a political fix that isn’t there and I’m sorry, the system does work. It proved that it worked in Bondi and the laws that changed were not going to change Bondi at all. So why did we do them? It was all about trying to make a political fix for Anthony Albanese and Chris Minns.”
