FIRIES WORK “NIGHT AND DAY” AFTER MERCURY SCARE

CUNNAMULLA’s State School has reopened but more checks need to be done before some locals return to their private residences after a liquid mercury scare.

The Queensland Fire Department says it’s continuing its response, which came after students turned up at school on Monday with containers of liquid mercury, sourced from the town dump.

“Crews have worked night and day to isolate contamination areas, conduct testing and safely remove the contamination where required,” the QFD posted on Facebook today.

Prior to day five of the response, the firies had given the all-clear in relation to three homes, the state school and the waiting room at Cunnamulla Hospital’s emergency department.

“Operations will focus on testing and clearing a further five homes suspected of being contaminated, plus a local business, Paroo Council depot and the local refuse tip,” QFD says.

The Local Disaster Management Group, which kicked into action on Monday night, has made no reference to any contamination in its messaging.
