THE fight between local government and the Federal Government continues and the South-West is in the thick of it.
Last week, Murweh Mayor ‘Zoro’ Radnedge flew to Melbourne, to line up alongside five of his colleagues from various parts of Queensland.
They included Ry Collins, Mayor of Whitsunday, whose area has a long history of being devastated by cyclones powering in from the Coral Sea.
Initially, Mayor Radnedge indicated there was a meeting with “Federal Cabinet” but that turned out not to be the case.
Instead, the delegation, organised by the Local Government Association of Queensland, met with Federal Minister Kristy McBain.
She is responsible for disaster management and a central figure to Canberra’s controversial proposal to change disaster funding arrangements.
Regardless, Mayor Radnedge is maintaining the rage, as the Feds push for a 50-50 funding split with the States and Territories.
“It’s great to be part of that, the fight,” he told listeners in today’s LOCAL NEWS on 4RR-FM.
Minister McBain, whose responsibilities also include local government, is yet to make any announcements in response to last week’s meeting.
