FORMER Rugby League stars Alex Glenn and David Mead have been tripping around the South-West on an important mission.
As part of the highly acclaimed ‘Beyond the Broncos’ program, they’ve been in Charleville and Cunnamulla to encourage First Nations students, especially female students, to finish high school before making the transition to the workforce or further studies.
Glenn, a former Broncos captain who made over 250 appearances for the club and also represented his country of birth, New Zealand, plus the Cook Islands at the international level, has been part of the program for five years and continues to lap up his post-retirement work.
Former PNG captain Mead, who also spent time at the Broncos after 147 games for the Gold Coast and capped 15 times by the Kumuls, is also enjoying his off-field role at Red Hill.
During their visit to our part of the world, the pair popped into 4RR-FM, speaking to station manager and morning presenter Luke Robinson.
Interestingly, our station has its own little connection to the ‘Beyond the Broncos’ program.
One of our up-and-coming announcers, Laquisha O’Neil, was part of it when she was a student at Charleville State High School.
“It gave me a reason to go to school,” she says, before getting behind the mic for her own show from 1pm.
