DETECTIVES from the Rural and Stock Crime Squad are appealing for public assistance after the theft of approximately 5,500 dorper sheep near Blackall.
At this stage, investigations indicate the dorper ewes and rams were stolen from a property on the Blackall-Isisford Road between February and May 2026.
The sheep are fitted with white National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) tags.
Police are urging anyone who has seen dorper sheep matching this description, or who has information about their whereabouts, to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who observed suspicious stock movements, livestock transport activity or other unusual behaviour in the area.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Elliot from the Rural and Stock Crime said livestock theft remained a significant concern for police, with thefts having a devastating impact on farmers and the broader community.
“Livestock theft can result in substantial financial losses and place additional pressure on farming businesses already facing challenging conditions,” Detective Senior Sergeant Elliot said.
“Police estimate the value of the stolen Dorper sheep at more than $1.7 million.
“Livestock theft investigations can be complex, often spanning large geographical areas, which is why we work closely with producers, saleyards, transport operators and industry stakeholders to identify offenders and disrupt criminal activity.
“We encourage anyone with information about this theft, or any suspicious activity involving livestock, to come forward and contact police.”
