WILLS ST CLOSED OFF FOR WATER MAIN RENEWAL PROJECT

CHARLEVILLE’s main street has been partially closed as work commences on a new water infrastructure project in the town centre.

The project involves the replacement of water mains, dating back about half a century and it will lead to temporary road closures and potential interruptions to water supply until May 29.

Council workers were out and about in Wills St yesterday and by 2pm today, the northbound section of Wills St between Galatea and Alfred Streets had been blocked off to motorists.

In a hand-delivered letter to local business houses this week, Murweh Shire Council says the existing asbestos cement water pipes have well and truly had their day.

“These ageing lines are particularly susceptible to breakages during the colder months,” explains Council’s chief executive officer Bruce Scott.

Once the new water infrastructure has been rolled out, Council will then prepare for resealing works next month for parts of Alfred and Wills Streets.
