MARANOA MP David Littleproud is continuing his 10-day Outback tour, with one notable omission, as reported on-air in our LOCAL NEWS today.
In what has certainly raised eyebrows in Thargomindah, the Bulloo Shire in ‘Corner Country’ has been by-passed on Mr Littleproud’s latest expedition.
Mr Littleproud, who will speak LIVE on-air in the 4RR-FM studios next Tuesday after our 4pm news, reportedly began his trip at Goondiwindi.
The former Nationals Leader has since dropped into Hebel and Cunnamulla where yesterday he officially re-opened the Yapunyah Lodge aged care facility.
Much to the disappointment of locals, the centre closed in 2020 and its re-opening had been championed by the Paroo Shire Council for several years.
Gwandalan Support Services, which now owns Yapunyah Lodge, also has plans to build ‘Lorna’, a new 40-bed aged care facility in Cunnamulla.
“People out here shouldn’t be second-class citizens,” says Mr Littleproud, whom you’ll hear from, again on-air, in our LOCAL NEWS tomorrow from 6am.
“The tyranny of distance in the bush too often means families getting split up, parents leaving the home they’ve known all their lives just to access care.”
After visiting Cunnamulla, Mr Littleproud then headed further west to Eulo before heading onto Quilpie, Birdsville and other Outback communities.
In the process, he skipped the Bulloo Shire, whose long-serving Mayor ‘Tractor’ Ferguson was highly critical of Mr Littleproud almost three months ago.
“He needs to get his act together,” Cr Ferguson told 4RR-FM at the time, hot on the heels of the Coalition’s catastrophic loss in the Farrer by-election.
Mr Littleproud is meeting with key stakeholders right across the vast Maranoa electorate, which is about one and a half times the size of France.
Those stakeholders include the Charleville Sub-Branch of the RSL and Bidjara Media & Broadcasting, which owns and operates 4RR-FM.
