THARGOMINDAH was rocking on Saturday night after the tiny town hosted Rugby League for the first time in 24 years.
In front of a bumper crowd, Thargo Bulls also chalked up their first win in almost a quarter of a century – in the final game on the program, a 38-14 thrashing of the Cunnamulla Rams.
Spectators included Bulloo Shire Council Mayor John ‘Tractor’ Ferguson, a former Thargo player, whose close-knit community was devastated by floodwaters just over 12 months ago.
Cr Ferguson’s daughter, Bulls president Tamie Warner, was beaming after the final whistle, capping a dream comeback by the Bulls, who’d been in hiatus since the early 2000s.
“I was so proud of the boys. At the end of it, it really doesn’t matter. We’ve got Charleville here, we’ve got Cunnamulla here. Thank you to all these other teams that come along and supported Thargo,” she said as the celebrations began.
In the earlier matches for the seniors, Charleville beat the Bulls 12-nil before the Comets backed up to defeat Cunnamulla 18-4 with the Rams having to deal with a player shortage.
