COLLAROY CUP DUSTED OFF AFTER THREE DECADES

FOR the first time in three decades, the South West’s historic Collaroy Cup will be up for grabs this weekend in Charleville.

Donated in the 1950s by JJ Gardiner of Collaroy station, the trophy was once considered the symbol of supremacy for lawn bowls in the South West.

In a major boost for the sport locally, the silverware has been dusted off and the Charleville Bowls Club’s ‘Stick’ Newby says it’ll be presented again this Sunday.

“I don’t think it’s been played since 1995 and ’96….last time it was played between Charleville, Cunnamulla and Quilpie,” ace bowler Newby explains.

Quilpie don’t have enough players to participate this year, meaning it’ll be an eagerly-awaited showdown between the hosts and the last winners, Cunnamulla.

Charleville is also contesting the Warrego Division Pennants this weekend, a first for Newby’s club, he says, with play starting at 1pm on Saturday.

That opening clash pits Charleville against Quilpie with the visitors backing up at 9.30am on Sunday against Cunnamulla.

After the lunch break, Sunday’s action resumes at 1pm when Charleville play Cunnamulla.
