CHARLEVILLE’s latest instalment of ‘Wings on the Warrego’ has received the thumbs up from Murweh Shire Council Mayor Zoro Radnedge.
An estimated 2,000 people descended on the local airport last weekend for the airshow where Spitfires, Kittyhawks, and an array of vintage aircraft including a World War II-era biplane brought aviation history to life and inspired the next generation including children who were mesmerised with the warbirds.
The centrepiece was Saturday’s Aerial Display & Aviation Careers Expo, with the latter connecting people with aviation professionals and pathways spanning commercial aviation, engineering, cabin crew, the iconic Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Australian Defence Force and emerging aviation technology.
The expo’s attendees included representatives from the local disaster management group, emergency services and the Department of Primary Industries, highlighting the role that aviation plays in disaster and recovery such as the ins-and-outs of helicopter evacuation and emergency response.
Another significant moment came with the unveiling of the Qantas Heritage Trail Monument, attended by direct descendants of the national carrier’s founding fathers – strengthening the connection between those formative years for ‘The Flying Kangaroo’ and Charleville’s aviation story.
Cr Radnedge said the weekend demonstrated the continuing strength of the town’s ties to the aviation world.
“To see so many people come to Charleville and experience our aviation story first-hand was fantastic,” he said. “It was particularly special to unveil the Qantas Heritage Trail Monument alongside direct descendants of Qantas founders Sir Hudson Fysh and Sir Fergus McMaster.”
“An event like Wings doesn’t happen without strong partnerships and I particularly want to acknowledge Viva Energy Australia, our principal partner, for getting behind our vision and helping us bring this remarkable aviation experience to Outback Queensland.
“We have an extraordinary aviation story, but Wings isn’t just about looking back. It’s about celebrating that history while showing our young people where aviation could take them in the future.”
